Matariki Love Note

Namaste and Happy Matariki Dear Friends!

It is so exciting to be celebrating Matariki (the Maori New Year) as a public holiday on June 24th for the first time here in Aotearoa! I have been busy recently building this new website (hope you like it). And soon I have a new intake of Nourishing Rhythms beginning in the New Year (June 27th) see below for more details.

Matariki *

Matariki is the Pleiades star cluster that is now becoming visible in our night sky. The name Matariki is shortened from “Ngā mata o te ariki Tāwhirimātea” meaning “the eye of the god Tāwhirimātea (God of the Weather)”.

As you may already know, I love looking into the meaning behind sacred and auspicious times of the year. I loved this website about Matariki and learning about these three, beautiful and ceremonial ways to celebrate Matariki:

1) Honouring those who have passed since last Matariki

2) Giving thanks, reconnecting with friends and whanau and feasting together

3) Sending our hopes and desires into the stars for Matariki.

If you don’t already have a karakia (blessing) for meal times, this is the one we use at home and is from Maori at Home by Scotty and Stacy Morrison.

Karakia

Nau mai e ngā hua
o Papatūānuku
o Ranginui kete kai
whītiki kia ora
haumi e, hui e, taiki e

I welcome these gifts of food
provided by Papatuanuku
and Ranginui, the bearers of food baskets
gifts that bind us together and sustain us
united as one.

Recipe

This is a wonderfully EASY Kumara, Leek and Spinach Frittata recipe that is super lovely for a Matariki gathering, a cosy dinner. It is perfect for morning or afternoon teas, is delicious and packed full of veggies and protein.

Click here for recent testimonials and FAQ’s.

In other news:

Last month I had a nasty mountain bike crash resulting in concussion and a sprained wrist. So I was forced to surrender to the urge of productivity, to rest and slow down. Of course falling is all part of it, especially when trying to be like these Rad Wahine’s.

While I know I shouldn’t have been on screens, I did re-watch Cooked, a 4 part documentary on Netflix featuring the amazing Michael Pollan - his teachings are so inspiring and there are some really beautiful and important nutrition, cookery, and cultural teachings in this documentary. Excellent watching for a rainy restful snuggly weekend on the couch!

I wish you the most beautiful Matariki and Winter Solstice! I hope you get to connect with some of your favourite lovelies, honour those amazing ones who have passed and send your desires and dreams up to the stars of Matariki!

Nga mihi nui / Many Thanks,

Roshni xx
